Symptom
When opening the website in the browser, the page only shows
"Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute."
Cause
If the Wordpress instance is configured to check for updates by night and install the updates, it will go into maintenance mode at night, install updates, and then leave maintenance mode. Very rarely Wordpress does not leave maintenance mode after automatically maintaining the website. The reasons can be very different.
Solution
Delete the ".maintenance" file from the document root directory to return your Wordpress installation to normal operating mode. Wordpress will immediately show the website in the browser again.
